Same-day delivery wars hot up in the UK, but Amazon still sets the standards

With options ranging from one-hour to drone-based delivery, Amazon is keeping its first-mover advantage

For those of you who are inveterate planners, you have probably already hidden away your smugly-wrapped Christmas presents under the bed. But for everyone else, here’s some good news: Amazon has launched unlimited same-day delivery service for customers in Greater London, parts of Hertfordshire and Berkshire.

This may sound like a minor upgrade in delivery options, but it’s significant – Amazon’s same-day gambit has raised the bar for what we, as consumers, have come to expect of all businesses.

Our expectation of pressing a button to gratify an instant desire is a result of the burgeoning on-demand economy, which embraces everything from shopping to food, pet-care, transport and even laundry.

Step outside on a rainy Friday night and open up the Uber app – your taxi pulls up in front of you within five minutes.

Fancy a Chinese takeaway from that small family-owned place? Order it on Deliveroo while you’re still at work and a hot meal will be waiting at your door.

Shoreditch-based Bizzby can find you a plumber, gardener or locksmith within 60 minutes; Covent Garden startup Jinn’s couriers can drop off some emergency loo roll or a laptop charger in London or Newcastle, if you find yourself lacking.

Even in retail, Amazon isn’t the only player in the instant delivery game – itjoins high street retailer Argos, which launched its UK-wide same-day delivery service last month. There’s also eBay’s Shutl and fashion outlets such as Net-a-Porter, whose Premier service is only available in London, New York, Hong Kong, and Farfetch, which launched its same-day shipping option in London just this week.

Amazon’s same-day service, which applies to a limited pick of about 1m items, ranging from televisions to toys, is free to Prime members, who currently pay an annual £79 subscription fee for unlimited free shipping. Even if you haven’t signed up for the popular Prime service yet, you can get same-day delivery if you’re willing to pay £9.99 per order.

The e-tailer’s move follows the launch of its Prime Now app in June, which, even more ambitiously, offers Prime shoppers deliveries within the hour for £6.99. This service includes frozen foods and snacks, such as Chicago Town pizzas, Birds Eye fish fingers and Ben & Jerry’s ice-cream, edging towards the territory of UK grocers.

The delivery wars in the UK are intensifying by all accounts – Argos has leveraged its network of stores around the country to offer UK-wide deliveries, 7 days a week and has even flung a direct challenge at Amazon by offering the service for free in the run-up to Black Friday, the huge discount shopping day two weeks today.

UK startup Shutl, bought by eBay in 2013, is a logistics company that partners with local retailers to offer deliveries not just on the same day, but within 90 minutes. They have previously worked with Argos, and currently partner with British retailers like Hotel Chocolat, Maplin, Schuh, Coast, Karen Millen and Warehouse. Of course, this only works if one of these shops is nearby to you, because Shutl is powered by localised couriers.

Further afield, global minicab-app Uber has recently rolled out UberRush, a same-day delivery service for small merchants in three US cities including Chicago, New York and San Francisco, leveraging its cavernous network of on-demand drivers.

A study by L2 with retail consultancy Rich Relevance showed that widespread networks of couriers, like Uber drivers, have made it more economically realistic for retailers to offer same-day delivery.

Amazon’s strategy piggybacks on this – it has aggressively widened its web of global warehouses and fulfilment centres, so it can offer rush deliveries to fee-paying customers throughout the world.

In recent years, it has ramped up its network within the UK, with nine fulfilment facilities, and £1bn invested in UK operations, at last count. Distribution centres are the limiting factor for many other retailers, including Net-a-Porter, for instance.

Compared to national high-street competitors like Argos, Amazon’s advantage is sheer variety of choice – as it increases the range of items available on the same day, Argos’ catalogue just won’t be able to keep up.

And Amazon is not limiting itself to same-day deliveries by road; it wants to speed up the process by taking to the skies. In March, UK Transport Minister Robert Goodwill said he had met with the US-based e-commerce company about potentially test flying a “Prime Air” service, which would use small aerial drones to get deliveries to customers within 30 minutes.

“One day Prime Air deliveries will be as common as seeing a mail truck,” the company’s chief executive, Jeff Bezos, told my colleague James Quinn in August.

Analysts and journalists alike have speculated that the Amazon’s Prime service is too good to last – signs of cracks, they say, are that the e-commerce giant has had to move up its order cut-off time, and put up the price of annual Prime membership in order to cover increased costs of shipping.

Amazon’s growth-first, profit-later strategy seems to be working: this quarter, the company made a $79m (£51m) net profit, compared to a $437m loss in the same period in 2014, as revenues increased by 23pc to $25.4bn.

And even if Amazon starts off by losing money on its pioneering delivery services, here’s its big idea: it can gain a first-mover advantage over online and offline competitors, while also creating a whole new segment in home delivery speeds. If you can get your freshly-prepared dinner in 30 minutes, why should you wait any longer for a dress or a television that is sitting on a shelf, at a warehouse near you?

As the new speedy services slowly become habitual, just like free shipping worldwide has become ingrained in our online shopping expectations, we will come to expect it from all retailers. And as before, it’s because Amazon has already set the bar high.

Dog transport begins between Netherlands and U.S.

She may not be as pioneering as Laika, the Soviet space dog from the 1950s, but Tiffany, a young Dutch Smoushond, has made a name for herself as the first animal that American Airlines Cargo has shipped as live cargo from the Netherlands to the United States.

Animal forwarding company Animals to Fly gave Tiffany the VIP treatment with a direct trans-Atlantic ride in a kennel carrier, inside a comfortable 757 belly hold, to Philadelphia, where her new owners were waiting. Being not only a very rare breed but also a puppy, Tiffany required extra care, so AA Cargo’s GSA, FlyUs, arranged to have two animal wranglers, Patrick Smidt and Benny Bekker, to accompany her on her journey.

According to Animals to Fly, the adventurous Tiffany arrived unscathed in Philadelphia after a nine-hour door-to-door delivery.

Southampton based logistics firm joins European giant

A Southampton based logistics firm has become the latest company to join Palletways, Europe’s largest and fastest growing palletised freight network.

Joining Palletways, Acclaim Logistics, based on Calmore Industrial Estate in Totton, will handle single pallet loads to large scale consignments and will cover the SO postcodes in Southampton and the PO postcodes on the Isle of Wight.

Tesco slashes payments terms to 14 days for small firms

The supermarket giant will pay its tiniest suppliers in just two weeks, but larger companies will still have to wait up to 55 days

Tesco has announced plans to slash payment terms for smaller suppliers by half, to help usher in a new era of transparency and fairness at the supermarket giant.

Its smallest suppliers, selling products worth £100,000 or less in a year, will receive payments within 14 pays, chief executive Dave Lewis revealed today. This is down from the industry standard of 28 days.

Speaking at the retail industry’s IDG Conference on Tuesday, the Tesco boss claimed that payment terms would be standardised and simplified over the next nine months.

“One of the things that made Tesco great was the little things we did to help our customers,” he said. “We want to work with our suppliers to get back to innovating on behalf of our customers and these changes will make is easier for us to do that.”

Larger suppliers, selling up to £10m-worth of products into Tesco each year, have also had their payments terms improved. The supermarket has shaved five days off the industry standard.

The amount of time that Tesco will take to pay up varies widely by product category: sellers of fish, meat, fruit, and vegetables will be paid within 23 days, while companies supplying wine, beer and spirits, or clothing and merchandise, will still have to wait 55 days.

A spokesman for Tesco said that the longer wait for alcohol and clothing companies reflected the non-perishable nature of the products.

Small companies offering chilled, convenience or frozen food will be paid within 30 days, the same for pet food. It will take 35 days to pay dairy suppliers, while Tesco requires 40 days to settle invoices from bakery, grocery, household, health and beauty businesses.

The supermarket has been criticised for its treatment of suppliers for a number of years and in June this year Tesco topped a Groceries Code Adjudicator list for supplier complaints.

Some 30pc of the 1,000 supermarket suppliers surveyed said that Tesco rarely complied with the Groceries Supply Code of Practice, while 4pc said that it never complied. Only frozen food retailer Iceland received a worse score from its suppliers.

In February, Tesco emailed its suppliers demanding price cuts because of the slide in commodity markets and threatened to withdraw products if suppliers refused to capitulate, prompting an industry backlash.

“By introducing a new standardised policy across each category for our larger suppliers, and shorter payment terms for our small and medium suppliers, it will help us to deliver a fairer, more transparent and consistent approach across our supply base,” Mr Lewis said.

“We are pleased to see Tesco has listened to our arguments and made improvements to its payment practices towards its smaller suppliers,” John Allan, national chairman for the Federation of Small Businesses, said of Tesco’s new payments policy.

“The new standardised and clearly defined payment terms should provide a far more reasonable payment framework for small firms. It will allow them to have more confidence when doing business, giving them the ability to plan ahead more effectively. We hope today’s announcement will go some way to easing the pressure on the supply chain and that other big companies will make similar changes to their payment terms.”

Tesco, which works with 1,800 small UK suppliers, will make no financial gain from the changes, it claimed, and in fact estimated the cost of implementing the changes at £231m.

Keith AcAvoy, co-founder of craft beer start-up Seven Brothers, was offered a listing with Tesco earlier this year but turned down the opportunity. These new terms will encourage more small suppliers to consider doing business with the grocer, he claimed.

“This would most definitely affect our decision to move forward with the Tesco offer,” he said. “We’re a new company and cashflow is one of our biggest foes. It would be incredible if Tesco became of the quickest to pay invoices. Normally with such an organisation we could be waiting 90 days for invoices to be paid. This definitely changes things.”

Osborne to set up new infrastructure commission – transport in Manchester

The Chancellor will unveil a new independent national board to review spending.

George Osborne will promise to break Britain’s transport spending ‘inertia’ in his conference speech – with plans for HS3 top of the list.

The Chancellor will unveil a new independent national board to review spending priorities for transport, house building and power stations in each region, to be headed up by Labour peer Lord Adonis.

His policy is a brazen lift of a Labour manifesto pledge at the last election – which was drawn up by Lord Adnois – and will see him resign his party whip.

Treasury sources – who referred to the move as a ‘sweeping’ change in the way spending is planned – said the first issue it will look at will be joining up major cities with modern transport links, often referred to as ‘HS3’.

It will also report back regularly on the progress of government infrastructure projects and spending, much as the Office for Budget Responsibility does for the economy.

Mr Osborne is expected to say to conference in Manchester: “Where would Britain be if we had never built railways or runways, power stations or new homes?

“I’m not prepared to turn round to my children – or indeed anyone else’s child – and said I’m sorry, we didn’t build for you.

“We have to shake Britain out of its inertia on the projects that matter the most.”

The news comes after the Tories dramatically ‘unpaused’ northern rail electrification ahead of conference, after facing a backlash over the move in the summer.

It is unclear exactly how the new body will interact with Transport for the North, the coalition of northern councils set up – and handed £30m – in the summer budget to ‘set out transport policies and investment policies’ in a ‘long-term strategy’.

Sources said TfN, which has been spearheaded by Manchester council leader Sir Richard Leese, would ‘feed in’ to the review.

In addition the Chancellor will also announce plans to merge the country’s 89 local government pension funds, including Greater Manchester’s, into five or six regional pots of around £25bn each – so they are big enough to invest in infrastructure projects.

Greater Manchester’s pension fund already controls £16bn in assets.

Legally the new pots cannot be forced to choose infrastructure – but the Treasury believes they are far more likely to do so with access to greater funds.

MAINTAINING DIESEL PARTICULATE FILTERS

Euro-6 emissions regulations have meant a rapid increase in the number of trucks on the road fitted with diesel particulate filters (DPFs) – an essential part of Euro-6, which prevent particulate matter and other emissions from being released into the atmosphere.

DPFs are an essential maintenance item for operators to factor into their vehicle schedules, which must be cleaned or replaced at regular intervals. With filters for commercial vehicles costing between £1,200-£4,000, replacing items damaged through clogging or mishandling is an expensive business.

Slough-based emissions specialist Ceramex has developed new processes for cleaning and inspecting DPFs, as well as an exchange filter programme for a number of vehicle manufacturers.

Marcus Beament, Account Manager for Ceramex, explains why proper handling and cleaning is important. “The DPF is a key part of the emissions system. It reacts adversely and eventually fails if ash accumulates inside and not cleaned out.”

Ceramex has developed a process called Xpurge which uses purified water and an air pulse to return the DPF to “good-as-new” levels, according to Beament. Once the filter has been cleansed, Ceramex inspects it to check for small holes and cracks, comparing the cleaned filter’s efficiency with that of a new filter.

The largely automated process takes about two hours from the filter arriving at Ceramex’s Slough facility to completion for dispatch back to a dealership.

The company’s filter exchange programme means that when a clogged DPF is taken off a truck in a dealer’s workshop it can immediately be replaced by a cleaned one off the shelf in the parts department.

Some service departments have caused damage to filters by attempting to blow out the accumulated particulate matter using a workshop airline. Unfortunately the damage can render the filter too damaged to be swapped. This approach is also only likely to clear about 30% of any blockage in the filter, as well as blowing carcinogenic material out into the air.

DPFs regenerate periodically under normal vehicle usage, but the burn-off process is intended to clear soot from the filter rather than ash, which will continue to accumulate. This creates back pressure in the system which can increase diesel consumption by up to 5%. If the DPF clogs up completely, the engine will eventually switch into limp-home mode and the filter will be more difficult to revive.  As Beament observes, “A blocked DPF means the engine cannot breathe and will react accordingly. It will be asked to work a lot harder and will burn more fuel as a consequence.”

Cleaning frequency will depend on how the vehicle is used. Some manufacturers suggest the filters can last up to 200,000km before the first clean is required, but it will vary considerably depending on the vehicle’s workload.

“It could be once every two years or once every 12 months depending on whether the truck spends most of its time on the motorway or is on city centre delivery work,” Beament observes.

Ceramex has gained considerable experience in cleaning DPFs in recent years for vehicles fitted with filters to meet requirements of the London Low Emission Zone, with some LEZ filters having been successfully cleaned up to 10 times.

With DPFs a key part of Euro-6 emissions regulations, the company’s workload has increased already, and the imminent adoption of Euro-6 standards for vans means that is expected to continue to increase in coming years. “We’re already cleaning thousands a year and we can scale up our capacity to deal with tens of thousands more,” says Beament.

Electric trains to be introduced on Liverpool to Preston line – but direct services to Blackpool to change

The direct train service between Liverpool and Blackpool is set to be cut next month.

Northern Rail is introducing electric trains between Lime Street and Preston following the introduction of an electrified line.

But the trains won’t be able to continue to Blackpool because that stretch of the line is not yet electrified.

Passengers wishing to continue their journey to Blackpool will need to do so by diesel rail.

Northern Rail say there will remain some direct diesel services to Blackpool on a reduced basis but that, overall, there will be more services following the introduction of the electrified track.

Joselyn Rankin, of Northern Rail said: “The people of Liverpool will have better trains running north with the introduction of the electric.

“The introduction of these larger, four-carriage trains will increase Northern’s total capacity by an estimated 4.8m and are more environmentally friendly than their diesel predecessors.”

She said: “The change will only affect the passengers who continue their journey beyond Preston, which at the moment is only 10%. But those who do will be able to use the diesel direct or take an electric train to Preston and continue their journey on a diesel.

“There will still be the hourly through service between Liverpool and Blackpool on Sundays.”

There are some services already operated by electrics in the area. The half-hourly stopping service between Liverpool and Wigan on weekdays is operated by a Class 319 electric train.

Transport Exchange traffic up by one third

Transport Exchange Group Traffic Up By One Third

The number of loads posted on Transport Exchange Group’s freight trading web site in the past six months up by more than a third year-on-year, reflecting increasing demand for freight capacity.

The TEG said membership of Haulage Exchange and Courier Exchange had grown by ten per cent so far this year alone to more than 4,000 operators with a virtual fleet of 40,000 vehicles.

Lyall Cresswell, Managing Director of Transport Exchange Group, said: “Using the exchange, our members are able to identify, develop and maintain lasting relationships with partners and subcontractors to create trusted networks, which maximise and expand capabilities where required.”
